More Price Pictures

My third cousin, Kim in California, who I've only met online through my blog, has sent me more photos of our Price relatives from South Bend, Indiana. If you click on the photo you can see them in much greater detail. Kim said she thinks these four pictures were taken in 1927, roughly twenty-five years after the 1902 Price Family Reunion photo that appeared last year in a previous post.

The really great thing about the 1902 Reunion photo is that that picture has numbers on each of the individuals and names to go with the numbers on a separate page so it's fairly easy to identify almost all of the nearly fifty individuals in the photo. These four photos aren't numbered or coded, so to identify people you have to imagine how much different they would have looked twenty-five years later. Many of the adults in these photos were small children in 1902.

Kim asked me if I recognized any of the children in these photos. I can't really claim that I do, but I did point out to her that my mother was born in 1926 and her older brother was born in 1925. If you look carefully at the upper right photo, you'll see that it includes a woman standing in the middle row with a baby girl in her arms who looks to be perhaps a year old or a little less. Standing directly in front of that woman is a small boy who looks to be about two years old. I don't think Kim would have sent me this picture if she weren't fairly certain that the woman holding the baby was my grandmother, Carlie (Ruth) Steele. That would make the baby my mother, Carolyn, and her two year old brother my Uncle John.

The woman at the far left of the upper left photo was my great grandmother, Laura (Price) Steele, pictured with her six older sisters and three older brothers. The man at the far left of the lower left photo was my great grandfather, Ira Steele. I suspect that the man standing in the front row in that picture with a two year old boy in a sailor suit in front of him was my grandfather, Cleon Virgil Steele.

The three of them, Great Grandpa Ira, Grandpa Cleon and Uncle John, are sitting together in the front row in the photo on the lower right. Cleon is the one wearing the hat. I think Cleon is also the man on the far right in the upper right photo. Kim tells me that her mother and grandmother are also in these photos and that her mother was born the same year as my Uncle John.

I don't see my grandmother's brother Clayton Klofper in the photo. He had a wife Winnie and two daughters Jane and Ruth.

If there are any Price Family members out there reading this, please comment. We'd love to hear from you!

So nice to hear from you, Kim! The fellow directly behind Cleon in the lower left photo looks like Clayton Klopfer to me and the fellow to his right looks like Earl Price. Was one of the Price brothers deceased in 1927? It seems like the fellow behind Cleon in the lower left photo may be filling in for one of the Price brothers in the upper left photo. He doesn't look old enough to actually be one of them. He's standing with the Price sisters in the lower right photo and I think it could be Clayton. It looks like Earl Price and Willard Knepp are kneeling in the front row in that picture and I think the man sitting in front of Earl might be Ralph Gushwa. What do you think?

I think that you are right. I'd like to look at the photos a bit closer with a magnifying glass!

Hi Craig! I am going to go thru a fe more drawers and see if I can find aymore photos. Why don't you email your aunts and see if they could scan a few photos? Phyllis had one when I met her in South Bend last summer. It was a charming one of your grandparents!

Hello Renegade eye! How are you related to The Prices?

Was wondering how Ralph Gushwa would come to be in this reunion. Was his wife Irene there? They were my Grandparents! My Dad is their son Ralph W. Gushwa.

Hi Juno,

Ralph is there because his mother, Emeline, was one of the famous Price sisters. If you click on the link for the 1902 Reunion you can get a good look at Ralph's parents, Albert and Emeline, when they were younger than you are now. Ralph was my grandfather's cousin. Haven't yet identified all of the kids in the 1927 photos. What year was Ralph W. born. Can you pick him out of a lineup?

Lydia Anne Price was the daughter of Nathan Cordray. It appears Nathan moved from Maryland to Ohio around 1810 with his parents when he was ten years old.

My ancestor, Elias Steele, moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio around 1830 when he was nineteen. Two of his father's younger brothers moved to Ohio before the War of 1812. They made barrels and ran a flatboat on the Tuscarawas. One of them married a Gushwa sister who died young. A few years later he remarried to another Gushwa sister.

Nathan Cordray, Elias Steele and Alexander Price all moved with their families from Ohio to South Bend in 1864 during the Civil War. Ira Steele, a grandson of Elias, married Laura Price, whose older brother, Frank, was married to the daughter of one of Ira's uncles. She died young and eventually Frank remarried to his first wife's younger sister, also a Steele.

My great grandmother's older sister, Emma Price, married a Gushwa, the father of Ralph C. and the grandfather of Ralph W. Gushwa.

My family moved to Seattle in 1961 from Topeka when I was seven years old. Juno and her family moved there the same year from South Bend.

Ralph C. Gushwa worked at Studebaker. One of Elias Steele's sisters married a Studebaker before 1820. A second Steele-Studebaker union took place before 1900, when Studebaker wagons still used horses.

My father, Ralph W. Gushwa worked at Studebaker as well. He worked with Chevant Clay in the design area. I'm so fascinated about all this info as it puts family history into better focus for me! Thanks Craig!

Getting a chance to meet family would be wonderful! My husband and I take care of my father these days near Spokane, Washington. I'm working from home editing books and doing pretty much any type of artwork I can get my hands on. From computer graphics and business branding to embossed foil LED lanterns. I'm also trying to open an artisan shoppe near the community college here.

I found Emma Price's Bible in my father's personal effects. He passed on last month and I found it in his dresser with is father, Ralph C.'s Bible. I was very shocked to see hers in there too. It's from London. I will work on putting up pictures of it.

Hello to the family I never knew I had. I am Juno's niece Kelly Haynes. My mom is Xena(Gushwa) I am excited to know there are many many more family members out there! Reading this has been great and I found out some very interesting info that is so amazing. To know what our family has been through and were we come from is the best thing I think I can give to my 4 kids. I will be keeping up with this blog and doing more digging to put together the best family tree I can for my kids and well for myself. So thank you all for the research you have done and all the knowledge you have shared.

My name is Sean O'Brien, son of Juno (Gushwa), great-grandson of Ralph C. I recently graduated from what used to be Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY (Now NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering), am having difficulty finding an engineering job, but am close on a few of the companies as I am typing this. It is really cool seeing things about my families' history that I never knew about. I have two brothers, Darryn M. and Colin J. (the latter is a half-brother on my father's end) and we definitely will be writing history as the years go on. I am never finished with my life. There is always something to be done. So the "Price" family name will definitely live on with all of us.
